Stephen Lightbown has been surfing for almost five years and took the sport up aged 40. He started surfing after reading an article about adaptive surfing at The Wave where he lives in Bristol. Since then, he has surfed consistently both at The Wave and in the sea, competing numerous times across Europe and twice at the ISA World Para Surf Champs in America.
Stephen is classified in the Prone Unassisted division.
Stephen has surfed many of the beach breaks across the south west, with Bude and Croyde being two of his favourite beaches to surf. Elsewhere in the UK Stephen has enjoyed catching waves at Benone Beach in Northern Ireland, although he’d rather not share that as the last time he was there he had the whole beach to himself.
Outside of surfing Stephen is a yoga teacher and published poet and children’s author. His next collection of heavily influenced surf poems for children will be published in 2026.
